BMW shows off first 'official' iPad integration, convinces us to go aftermarket

Look, BMW -- we appreciate that you were the first automaker to provide seamless iPod integration way back when, but seriously, did anyone on the design squad look at this abomination before shipping it off to France? As the story goes, the aforesaid automaker has demonstrated the first "official" iPad-vehicle integration setup at this year's Paris Auto Show, and to be frank, it's heinous. The idea here is to provide world-class rear-seat entertainment, while apparently destroying aesthetics in one fell swoop. It's just about too hideous to be true, but the iconic "BMW" logo on the mounting brackets all but confirms the authenticity. Perhaps you folks should consult with any number of the skilled DIYers out there before shooting for the stars with version 2.0?BMW shows off first 'official' iPad integration, convinces us to go aftermarket originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 30 Sep 2010 10:18:00 EDT. QNAP intros 1080p-capable NMP-1000P network multimedia player

It's a minor refresh, but a refresh nonetheless. If you'll recall, we saw the original NMP-1000 break cover at CeBIT 2009, and now that we're 1.5 years in the future, the QNAP NMP-1000P is making its debut for those who crave 1080p. Judging from the exterior, little has changed from then until now, but the revamped innards may be of interest -- there's a Sigma Designs SMP8643 SoC, a 667MHz CPU with floating point processor, support for 1080/24p playback and WiFi integration if you spring for an optional adapter. You'll also get a revised user interface, local and internet-based content streaming and room for a user-supplied 3.5-inch SATA hard drive, not to mention compatibility with just about every file format under the sun. Mum's the word on pricing and availability, but we're guessing it'll be out on shelves somewhere prior to the holidays.Continue reading QNAP intros 1080p-capable NMP-1000P network multimedia playerQNAP intros 1080p-capable NMP-1000P network multimedia player originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 30 Sep 2010 06:44:00 EDT. NFL 'currently talking' with Verizon to distribute programming on tablets

Ah, so now we understand Verizon's intentions to hastily roll out LTE service to NFL cities. The NFL, which has sided with Sprint over the years when it comes to cellular distribution of content, is apparently talking to Big Red in order to get its prized content into even more hands. As the idea of watching NFL games on-the-go because more and more sensible, the league is apparently mulling the decision to distribute games (and potentially more) on the next big thing. You know, tablets. Brian Rolapp, the NFL's senior vice president of media strategy, recently said the following: "The NFL will be on a tablet. It's a question of what shape or form. We are currently talking to Verizon about it." VZW declined to comment on the rumblings, but it's really not a shocker -- the carrier's doing everything it can to get a live LTE network here in the States, and inking a deal with America's most popular sporting league would obviously bring in boatloads of revenue. The real question is this: what tablet is the NFL eying, and if it's not the Samsung Galaxy Tab, what's Verizon's second tablet going to be? Inquiring minds would love to know.NFL 'currently talking' with Verizon to distribute programming on tablets originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 30 Sep 2010 20:17:00 EDT. Total number of internal TechCrunch meetings in the five years prior to AOL Acquisition: 1

I'm not even sure our AOL acquisition has legally closed yet. But today we celebrate our new corporate overlords with...an internal all hands. EVP David Eun, Heather's new boss, scheduled a whopping 3.5 hour all hands meeting today starting at 11. Everyone's here in the office pretending like it's perfectly normal to be awake and in the office at this ridiculous hour. And God help us if news breaks, because we'll all be in the conference room acting out a Dilbert cartoon.

I really don't like internal meetings, even if they do serve a purpose. We once had an all hands here at TechCrunch but it ended after a few minutes because I wanted to go back to my office and do anything else besides be in a meeting. I really hope this doesn't become a regular thing.

Ok, I'm off to go review HR policies, or something.

Beats by Dr. Dre launching Beatbox iPod dock, along with LeBron and Bieber-branded headphones

Dr. Dre knows a hit when he sees one, and the already sprawling Beats lineup is getting five new products to hit just about every demographic you can imagine. First off is the Beatbox, a high-end portable iPod dock with 5.25-inch bass drivers and 2-inch high frequency drivers which will retail for $400. Next up is a LeBron James-branded set of athletics-friendly earbuds dubbed the Powerbeats. The $170 headphones include dual drivers and a design that lets in external noises. Meanwhile, the Beats Pro blows the lid off with a $450 pricetag and audio pro-style quality and performance. At the cheap end we have iBeats, a $120 pair of i-device friendly cans for the less discriminating, and our personal favorites: JustBeats. JustBeats are better than all the other headphones and we heart them and they're totally worth $200 for the on-ear and $120 for the in-ear versions because Justin Bieber is totally down to earth and sexy and probably the best singer ever. All of these should be landing in the next few weeks; we know you'll make the right decision.

Update: Oh, and just so you know: we still hate Monster. You just can't pass up some Bieber, you know? Flying Humvee a step closer to reality, still seems like a really bad idea

It looks like AAI Corp has, indeed, landed the contract for feasibility studies of the Transformer flying Humvee project, which as far as we can tell takes a lightly armored (if armored at all) four man vehicle and puts it in the air, practically begging to be hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. And if that doesn't sound sketchy enough, keep in mind that among the design considerations are gas tanks in the craft's wings which, as Spencer Ackerman at Wired points out, would make really obvious targets. The testing should last about a year, and cost DARPA a cool $3 million. If all goes well, AAI could have a partial prototype in 2013.Flying Humvee a step closer to reality, still seems like a really bad idea originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 30 Sep 2010 01:46:00 EDT. Toshiba announces 'no-frills' Satellite C660 laptop

We've got to give Toshiba a bit of credit here -- it's certainly not trying to sell its new Satellite C660 (and accompanying Satellite Pro model) as something it's not. Tossing around words like "adequate" and "no-frills," the company says that the revised Satellite is a "smart and affordable" solution, and it does indeed look like it'll satisfy those looking for only the basics. That includes a 15.6-inch display, your choice of Intel or AMD processors up to a Core i3 or Athlon II, integrated graphics only, up to 8GB of RAM, up to a 640GB hard drive, and a multitouch trackpad, among other standard fare. The only difference with the Pro model, it seems, is Windows 7 Professional for the OS, a black textured casing, and a "non-reflective" screen. No word on exact pricing just yet, but you can look for this one to at least be available in Europe, the Middle East and Africa sometime in the fourth quarter of this year. Full press release is after the break.Continue reading Toshiba announces 'no-frills' Satellite C660 laptopToshiba announces 'no-frills' Satellite C660 laptop originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 30 Sep 2010 04:28:00 EDT. Epic 4G: problems so far -- and a few solutions

Since the Epic 4G launched on Sprint August 31, we've been receiving notes from owners on various issues they've experienced with the phone. We've heard about and experienced problems with the supposedly-fixed GPS, to surprisingly slow 3G uploads (fix on the way), to odd issues with battery drain and glitchy market install problems. Now that we're facing the end of Sprint's 30-day return period, we're wondering if Sprint and Samsung have shown enough of a commitment to resolving any problems to keep owners and potential buyers hanging on. Check after the break for a few of the issues we've found and what can be done about them, and let us know in our poll how optimistic you are about the future of this otherwise well-received device.Continue reading Epic 4G: problems so far -- and a few solutionsEpic 4G: problems so far -- and a few solutions originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 16:52:00 EDT. AT&T welcoming BlackBerry Curve 3G and Pearl 3G to the fold later this year

RIM products tend to have ultra-predictable launch cycles -- when Waterloo announces a new BlackBerry, odds are pretty great that your carrier's going to pick it up at some point, no matter what carrier that may be. So it goes with the Curve 3G and Pearl 3G; neither product is new, of course, but they're new to AT&T, which has just revealed that it'll be getting both this year. The Pearl seems like it'll probably be coming first, launching on October 17 for $149.99 on contract (in its 20-key flavor) with no rebate required; the Curve, meanwhile, slips in on a to-be-determined date "in time for the holidays" for $99.99 on contract, also sans rebate. Though no mention is made of upgradeability on the Pearl, the Curve is called out as being BlackBerry 6-ready -- RIM needs carrier buy-in to deploy these upgrades, so the fact that AT&T is saying it is notable. The Pearl's price seems way out of whack, but needless to say, we're sure some of the third-party resellers will be getting 'em out the door for a penny on contract within a few weeks. Follow the break for the press release.Continue reading AT&T welcoming BlackBerry Curve 3G and Pearl 3G to the fold later this yearAT&T welcoming BlackBerry Curve 3G and Pearl 3G to the fold later this year originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 13:27:00 EDT. Shervin Pishevar, founder and Executive Chairman of mobile gaming company SGN, has just taken the stage at TechCrunch Disrupt to showcase an impressive new iPhone application called Mini Tycoon: Casino. The game is the first of a series that Pishevar believes will be extremely popular on the platform ?he's predicting Casino will do over $1 million in revenue per month.

The preview of the game was fairly brief, but gameplay will be similar to Farmville, except you'll be planting slot machines instead of crops on your path to building a successful virtual casino. Pishevar says that the game has been in development for a year and that a huge amount of attention has been paid to getting the details right ? and the graphics do look quite polished.

Sanyo announces 2500mAh XX eneloop batteries, suitable only for devices aged 18 and over

Rechargeable batteries keep a lot of toxic goop out of the world's landfills, but ones that drain themselves whilst just sitting there in the drawer aren't exactly perfect themselves. Sanyo licked that problem with its eneloop cells, thanks to their low self-discharge rates, and now the company is doing even better: boosting capacity. Sanyo will soon ship the eneloop XX battery in AA size, a 2500mAh cell that offers 25 percent more oomph than its predecessors. Even more important? The black and silver logo that serves as "a further testament to Sanyo's design strength." These up-rated and macho-designed batteries start shipping in Europe in December and, while no price has yet been assigned, given the number of times Sanyo mentions "professional" in its press release (six) they probably won't be cheap.Sanyo announces 2500mAh XX eneloop batteries, suitable only for devices aged 18 and over originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 11:34:00 EDT. The world is not suffering from a dearth of WiMAX routers, but Clear has just a bit of room in their stable: while they offer 4G modems that plug into your computer over USB or Ethernet, along with battery-powered WiFi hotspots, they don't offer any home routers that do the WiFi thing, router thing, and WiMAX thing all-in-one. If this sounds like soft spot in their lineup to you, you'll be happy to know that an honest to goodness plug-it-into-a-wall 802.11n router with WiMAX, Clear branding, and possibly even a VoIP plug has just passed through the FCC. Fans of cyberwarfare (which we are, if only because we like to imagine that it looks like Battlezone) take note: following hot on the heels previous Cyber Storm I and II and Cyber ShockWave wargames, the Department of Homeland Security is sponsoring a little something called Cyber Storm III. Starting yesterday, the three-day exercise simulates more than 1,500 different types of attack, with a special emphasis on identities, trust relationships, and digital certificates. As Brett Lambo, director of Homeland Security's Cyber Exercise Program, told AFP, "we're kind of using the Internet to attack itself. At a certain point the operation of the Internet is reliant on trust -- knowing where you're going is where you're supposed to be." The exercise will test the National Cyber Incident Response Plan as well as the new National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center. BlackBerry PlayBook first eyes-on!

So RIM's got these PlayBooks locked in thick Plexiglas that seems specifically designed to prevent you from seeing the side, though we don't know why they'd want to do that considering it's a sexy 9.7mm thin. Anyhow, the screen seems pretty great -- we're not sure if it's IPS, but it's definitely high-res and should function really well for video and gaming. All told, it looks like it'll be about as easy to lug around as the Galaxy Tab, which makes sense considering we're looking at the same size display and roughly the same form factor. Peep the gallery!

OneHourTranslation Launches A Quick Translation Plug-in For Drupal Along With API

OneHourTranslation.com was born when its founders were trying to translate Hebrew blog posts into English. Discovering no one could do it for less than a few dollars per "page" - a page being anything under 500 words or so - they were stuck paying big bucks for translation. Why? Because the system wasn't centralized.

Fast forward to today. The service costs $ 0.07 per word and there are a number of languages available. The service works by contacting a network of thousands of freelance translators who are vetted by a community process and then allowed to pick and choose the jobs they want to take. It is, in fact, like having your own translator on staff.

We last talked about the company's TwitTrans service but now they've created a number of CMS plugins including services for Drupal (WordPress is coming soon) as well as an API so you can build your own apps. Essentially this injects a translation project into the service and returns the translation once its done. This allows you to quickly and easily translate blog posts on the fly or even translate an entire website as it is updated, all in an amazingly short time.

Avaya intros business-oriented A175 tablet, shows off Flare user interface

Avaya's not a name you generally hear when circling the consumer electronics water cooler, and even though it just introduced a new tablet, you still won't ever see this guy in Target, Best Buy or Walmart. Expected to cost between $1,500 and $2,000, this 11.5-inch enterprise tablet is designed primarily to be used at a cubicle, doubling as a SIP phone and tripling as an office collaboration tool. Dubbed a "Polycom killer" more than an iPad killer, this unit relies on Aura 6.0 and the newly designed Flare user interface (detailed in the video past the break), which enables touchscreen operation and supports multi-user video calling, email, web browsing and support for Android applications. Specs wise, it's "slightly thicker than an iPad," has a trio of USB 2.0 ports, inbuilt WiFi, 3G / 4G WWAN support and an integrated battery for those days when you simply have to clock in from the comfort of Venice Beach. Hit that More Coverage link for a live report at the device's unveiling, and feel free to start hassling your manager to order up a few dozen of these. Or use that money for office-wide raises -- whatever floats your boat.

Unless Steve Ballmer's planning on reading the Iliad all that time, that sounds like there'll be hands-on opportunities with WP7 devices to us. Co-creator of T9, Martin King, passes away

Some of today's young'uns starting out on QWERTY and full-touch devices might not even know what T9 is, but let us tell you something: back in the day, it was the way things got done on your phone. Copied by a number of manufacturers and software firms (notably Motorola with iTap), T9 was the premier product of start-up Tegic that would eventually find its way to a majority of phones with numeric keypads sold around the world -- several billion, in fact -- and continues to enjoy enormous success today. T9's co-inventor, Martin King, passed away this week after a protracted bout with cancer; though he hadn't been actively involved with Tegic (now a part of Nuance) in some time, he had been engaged with a newer startup, Exbiblio, whose technology actively parses words snapped by cameraphones and directs the user to more information in real time. Arduino Uno and Arduino Mega 2560 get friendly new USB plugs, new look

Arduino is so much about what is made with Arduino boards that we hardly spare a thought for the boards themselves. Well, Arduino cares, and they've just gone about redesigning their base model, now dubbed the Arduino Uno. It's of course backwards compatible with existing Arduino add-ons, but sets itself apart with a new USB controller with lower latency and driver-free operation on Mac and Linux. This should make Arduino slightly more friendly to the super novices, but of course the USB chip can be reprogrammed by the experts to be all sorts of things. Meanwhile, the Arduino Mega is getting the same USB chip along with an ATMega2560 processor with twice the memory. Right now only 128K is available, but that's a software limitation and they're working to unlock the rest of the memory space. The Mega sells for $65, while the Uno goes for $35. Next up? An Arduino board with built-in Ethernet and microSD. Crazy, we know. CEO Jeff Zucker leaving NBC following Comcast merger, exit stage left

Comcast's acquisition of NBC isn't quite in the bank just yet, but that doesn't mean the upcoming change isn't already dealing an impact. Current CEO and President Jeff Zucker announced today he plans to leave the company sometime following the takeover -- but also noting his final day might not be for another six months from now. "Comcast will be a great new steward, just as GE has been, and they deserve the chance to implement their own vision," he said. We wonder what exactly that new vision might be and how it pertains to the shift in online offerings -- for his part, Zucker's made a few headlines over the years that seem to suggest hesitation / aversion to the current digital transition. No successor has been named, but again, that could very well be half a year away -- as they say, stay tuned.

Update: And now it gets juicy. The New York Times is reporting that Zucker's departure wasn't exactly his call. MacBook Air suffers another bout of 11.6-inch display rumors

You know a device is due for a refresh when the only thing left to write about it is rumormongering of a possible upgrade. Today it's the turn of Apple Insider, citing sources in Taiwan, to declare that an 11.6-inch LED-backlit display will be headlining a long overdue update to Apple's MacBook Air. We've heard this scuttlebutt before, and the idea that the Air would be shrunken in order to better differentiate it from the MacBook Pro line carries a lot of believability, but we're still a little jaded from previous misleading rumors on the same subject. At least this one comes with all the gravitas of DigiTimes, whose scribes suggest Quanta has an order to build up to half a million 11.6-inch "MacBooks" for Apple in 2010. All that said, we still wouldn't be surprised if Apple let another holiday period go by without updating its unhealthily thin 13.3-inch laptop.MacBook Air suffers another bout of 11.6-inch display rumors originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 10:40:00 EDT. Google Names Five Winners Of Project 10^100, Awards $10 Million Total

Google's Project 10^100 ?an initiative that began two years ago today as a call for ideas that would help improve the lives of people around the world, some of which Google would fund ? is finally ready for its grand finale. Google has just announced that it's given a total of $10 million to five different organizations, after culling through over 150,000 ideas.

This is an awesome move by Google, but it's worth recapping the lengthy road it took to get here. Two years ago, in honor of the company's tenth birthday, Google announced the initiative, with plans to hold a vote on incoming submissions a few months later. But Google was mostly silent about the program for exactly one year (we'd occasionally get pinged asking what was going on), untilit revealed that it had been overwhelmed by the number of submissions and decided to have the community vote on which 16 broad themes it should be exploring most.

Huawei breaks DSL speed barrier with 700Mbps prototype

DSL cables might not really be the sexiest thing in networking anymore, but what they are is ubiquitous, so let's not begrudge Huawei its feat here. The Chinese telecoms facilitator has shown off a new prototype that can pump 700Mbps of data across a 400-meter expanse. This is done by bundling four twisted pairs of copper wire together and sprinkling in some fairy dust to make them communicate at 175Mbps each. The clever bit here is in how crosstalk and interference are minimized, and Huawei claims a 75 percent improvement in bandwidth as a result. An immediate opportunity for these new cables will be, ironically, with fiber rollouts, as they could serve as the last connection between fiber hubs and your home. Then again, with Google and Chattanooga already looking at 1Gbps lanes, maybe the day of the copper wire has already passed?Continue reading Huawei breaks DSL speed barrier with 700Mbps prototypeHuawei breaks DSL speed barrier with 700Mbps prototype originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 09:17:00 EDT. Comcast says additional Clearwire investment is unlikely

Clearwire isn't in the black yet, having bled about $126 million in the second quarter of 2010 -- but should the need arise for additional investment before it can turn a profit, the company shouldn't plan to knock on Comcast's door. Though it doesn't have as much visibility in the 4G marketplace as Clear and Sprint do, Comcast does actually offer WiMAX service using Clearwire's network and owns about 9 percent of it, but the cable provider's CFO says that the prospects for upping that share aren't good and that its up to Clearwire to "figure this out" -- "this" being its financial pickle. Not exactly a vote of confidence, is it? Obviously, adding (or converting to) LTE is a possible game plan for Clearwire that's going to require some serious cash to pull off, so staying tight with Sprint seems like a stellar idea right about now.Comcast says additional Clearwire investment is unlikely originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 00:54:00 EDT. Google's Schmidt says requiring stock Android would violate 'the principle of open source'

The suggestion has been made countless times that manufacturers who customize their devices' builds of Android (that is to say, nearly all of them) should have the decency to offer users the option of reverting to a completely clean, stock version of the platform if they so choose. The concept came up at a press lunch featuring Google CEO Eric Schmidt last week, and the dude responded with an interesting explanation for why they don't require that of their partners: "if we were to put those type of restrictions on an open source product, we'd be violating the principle of open source."

Of course, "the principle of open source" is open to wild differences in interpretation, the source of well over 20 years worth of intense debate in the developer community and the reason why countless types and versions of open source licenses exist (GPL, BSD, MIT, and so on). We'd also argue that the fact that Google is allegedly placing a range of arbitrary restrictions on certified devices (that is, those that feature the Market and other Google apps) gives them the platform they need to impose one more... but hey, Schmidt's an opinionated guy, and until Android stops growing by leaps and bounds, there's probably not a great capitalism-inspired argument that can be made here. Peep the video of the luncheon after the break.Continue reading Google's Schmidt says requiring stock Android would violate 'the principle of open source'Google's Schmidt says requiring stock Android would violate 'the principle of open source' originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 12:12:00 EDT. Sony's blazing fast BDX-S500U Blu-ray drive tests USB 2.0's true transfer chops

Here's a lesson in actual vs. theoretical. Sony Optiarc America has announced the new BDX-S500U external USB 2.0 Blu-ray drive capable of burning single-layer BD-R discs at smoking speeds of 6x or dual-layer discs at up to 4x. If you do the math, those specs imply transfer speeds of 27Mbps for single-sided 25GB discs and total burn times of roughly 20 minutes. That's great news for folks with PCs looking to use the high-storage medium or watch 3D Blu-rays -- except for one tiny hitch. See, USB 2.0's theoretical maximum transfer speed is 60MBps, but in the real world most are lucky to get even half that rate. According to tests by Techworld, those with certain USB 3.0 chipsets can even experience USB 2.0 rates as low as 11MBps. In that light, the BDX-S500U's impressive speeds -- just like Paul Walker -- may be too fast and too furious for its computer counterparts to keep up, making it a different kind of bag of hurt for buyers. While no official pricing has been offered the drive will go on sale later this month and online retailers are already listing prices in the range of $214 to $240. For full specs and details, check out the PR after the break.Continue reading Sony's blazing fast BDX-S500U Blu-ray drive tests USB 2.0's true transfer chopsSony's blazing fast BDX-S500U Blu-ray drive tests USB 2.0's true transfer chops originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 15:06:00 EDT. There finally piloting Nokia's Home Control Center in Finland

It sure started out as something promising. When Nokia spun off its Home Control Center technology to There Corporation last year it seemed that easy DIY home automation and power management was just around the corner. Yet here we are, almost two years after first hearing about the effort with nothing but a convoluted mess of unfriendly ZigBee and Z-Wave (to name just 2 "standards") home automation products to choose from. There is hope, small as it may be. There Corporation just announced that it's working with Mitox Oy to conduct a pilot in Finland for customers of Helsingin Energia (Helen) using a There-provided web-based solution built around the ThereGate. It allows individuals to monitor their total power consumption in real time as well as the individual devices and systems that consume energy. Better yet, There Corp employs a "rate control concept" that automatically adjusts power usage to hours when energy costs less based on simple guidelines programed by the user. Unfortunately, There Corporation's focus is on Nordic countries until 2012 before looking to dominate European home energy management in 2015. Call us crazy, but this market seems ripe for domination by a major consumer electronics company right now, not in 5 years.Continue reading There finally piloting Nokia's Home Control Center in FinlandThere finally piloting Nokia's Home Control Center in Finland originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 13:35:00 EDT. Facebook's had a rough day. In fact, it's had its worst day performance-wise in over four years, with 2.5 hours of downtime that resulted in countless complaints from users. Perhaps more important, it also had a bevy API problems, and its Like buttons ? which are embedded on over 350,000 sites across the web ? were apparently busted too. When Facebook goes down, it's a big deal.

This evening Facebook Director of Software Engineering Robert Johnson has written a post-mortem of the outage, explaining what caused the site to fail.

The little astromech smartphone that could (pilfer your wallet) is now touching down in at least one Verizon Wireless store, according to spy shots via Boy Genius Report. Verizon CEO talks (more) about iPhone: 'we have to earn it'

So, Apple's talked about putting the iPhone on Verizon, Verizon wants the phone... why can't we get these two crazy kids together? Well, Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg touched on that topic in a talk to investors at the Goldman Sachs conference today. "We don't feel like we have an iPhone deficit. We would love to carry it when we get there, but we have to earn it," Seidenberg said, walking a fine line between complimenting the phone and making it clear that Verizon still has a good lineup. Ivan also mixed in a basketball analogy to sweeten the deal: "This is like the Knicks getting Carmelo Anthony. Like it would be very good if the Knicks got Carmelo Anthony. But they have to play the game whether they get Carmelo Anthony, right?" Ivan hinted heavily that Verizon's forthcoming 4G LTE network could be the golden ticket, and while this isn't a new theory, it's unclear (and a little disconcerting) if he's just as in the dark as we are as to whether or not Apple will come around once LTE is up and running. Still, he put on a brave face: "At some point, Apple will get with the program." Our suggestion? Bake Steve a cake. Couldn't hurt!Verizon CEO talks (more) about iPhone: 'we have to earn it' originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 11:26:00 EDT. Pentax K-5 DSLR and Optio RZ10 hands-on

We didn't get a chance to lay hands on any of the colored variants, but the solid black Optio RZ10 was easily one of the best feeling point-and-shoots we've touched in quite some time. Pentax doesn't advertise the coating as being "soft touch," but that's exactly the vibe we get. It's also shockingly small to have a full-on 10x optical zoomer, and while things will get pretty ugly at ISO 6400, it's one of the few handhelds that even give you the option. The K-5 DSLR, on the other hand, simply didn't feel like a $1,600 piece. And it should, given that's what Pentax is charging for it. Sure, it's solid enough and comfortable to grip, but it's got a lot of proving to do in the reviews to come before we fully recognize the value proposition. Head on down below if you're up for more eye candy. Sony's VPL-VW90ES 3D projector priced and dated for the US

Say hello to the latest additions to Sony's lineup of SXRD projectors announced at CEDIA 2010, the VPL-VW90ES and the VPL-VWPRO1. Previously introduced at IFA, the VPL-VW90ES is not only Sony's first projector to wear the Elevated Standard brand and include all the custom installer tidbits that go with that, but it's also the first to do 3D. The MSRP for all that high end construction, 240Hz framerate and 1,000 ANSI lumens brightness is a buck under $10,000 when it ships in November. Just in case you don't have that in your couch cushions, it's also introduced a new 2D-only model at the lower end of the line, the VPL-VWPRO1 has a higher brightness rating than its more expensive cousin, but a lower contrast ratio and price of $3,400, available in October. Check the press release after the break for all the specs available or just peek in the gallery for our hands-on pics.

Michael Dell teases new 7-inch Android tablet, says Streak to land in Best Buy next month (update: pic)

Oh Michael, such a teaser you are. Word has it that the head honcho of Dell Inc. has just pulled out yet another Android tablet from his pocket, only this time it's a 7-inch whopper. Sadly, Mr. Dell left us high and dry with dates and specs (and the lack of photos from the event doesn't help, either), but we'll bet you that this is the long-rumored Looking Glass. On a more solid note, Dell also announced that the smaller Streak is heading to Best Buy next month. That's great, except some of us would rather see the tabletphone getting its share of Froyo sooner -- here's hoping that this bigger tablet won't disappoint us with an outdated OS.

Update: As it just so happens, Reuters snapped a pic of Mr. Dell himself holding the tablet on stage, and sure enough, it resembles that leaked Looking Glass even from quite a distance away.Michael Dell teases new 7-inch Android tablet, says Streak to land in Best Buy next month (update: pic) originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 22 Sep 2010 15:01:00 EDT.
