Daihatsu Pico concept commuter EV hands-on

Using LEDs to display messages on the back of a car? Looks like we have yet another contender with the same idea, except this time all four sides get an LED panel each. The idea behind Daihatsu's Pico concept EV is that it can interact with surrounding pedestrians and drivers using messages with matching colors. For instance, the LED belt can issue a red warning on the back if a car is following too closely; or when driving past pedestrians in close proximity (think rascal scooters but with front and back seats), the belt can turn green and indicate that the car's limited to a safe top speed of 3.7mph.

Other than that, the Pico's very much just a cute little EV with a driving range of up to 31 miles (with a full two-hour charge), plus a top speed of 31mph. We also dig the touchscreen console inside the car, but with just the two LED bars acting as doors, we sure hope it'll withstand a bit of rain. Video after the break.

Speedier Archos 101 G9 Turbo tablet hits the autobahn

Archos has tweaked its 101 G9 tablet with a new "Turbo" version for European users. The Turbo gets a 1.2GHz dual core processor, up from 1.0GHz, and increases storage capacity from 8GB to 16GB. Otherwise it looks the same: Android 3.2 Honeycomb, 10.1-inch display, and 802.11n WiFi support for faster porn downloads (it supports H.264 video, too). All this will set you back £299.99 or €349.99, though there's no sign of it in the US store at present. Leave it to the continent that gave us the Koenigsegg Agera and the Bugatti Veyron to get a turbocharged Android tablet, too.

[Thanks, Chris]

CalypsoCase for iPhone 4/4S Review

If you are the proud owner of an iPhone 4 or the newer ? and cooler ? iPhone 4S, you either have figured out that you need or want a protective case or have made the conscience decision that cases are clumsy, intrusive, ugly or all three and therefore, not for you. Well, what [...]

Curly Cables, Where Have You Been All My Life?

Screen shot 2011-12-01 at 10.00.09 AMSome of my favorite "inventions" are the simple ones. The ideas that are so obvious that we overlook them entirely. This new Kickstarter project, the Curly Cable, falls squarely into that category. Honestly, why hasn't this been created yet? The Curly Cable is an iDevice charge/sync cord that looks an awful lot like the telephone cords of yore, when you were chained to the wall by a curly knotted 30-foot mess. I'm not actually old enough to have used one of these ancient wired phones, but I hear they used to come in a nice mustard yellow or avocado green. The Curly Cable, fitted in Apple white, is much less tangly, and gives you an extra few feet of leeway when using a plugged-in iPad or iPhone.

Forget Seismologists: We Should Be Using Toads to Predict Earthquakes [Science]

We'd all love to be able to predict earthquakes ahead of time — just think of the lives that could be saved. But toads can spot subtle changes in water chemistry before quakes way better than any scientist. More »

Lenovo will launch a Windows Phone in the second half of 2012, says LePhone product manager

We've already been teased by a LePhone S2 moonlighting as a Windows Phone last month, but it was only yesterday that Lenovo confirmed an upcoming product featuring said OS. While boasting a mere total of 700,000 phone units sold since the original LePhone debuted in May last year (which is rather mundane compared to the Xiaomi Phone's 300,000 pre-orders in 34 hours), product manager Chen Yue told iMobile that Lenovo's now aiming to release a Windows Phone in the second half of next year. Well, that was apparently all Mr. Chen revealed -- no specs, no prices, and no mention of international launch. Either way, it looks like Nokia will have a nice head start in China with its Lumia 800. No wonder Elop's so happy these days.

TeamPoison Busts Into the UN and Leaks Passwords [Hackers]
