Ebuzzing Secures $25m To Expand European Social Marketing Platform

Buzz-logoWikio Group, best known for operating the Wikio news engine, has secured $25 million in financing from investors and is changing its name to ebuzzing, an existing product in its portfolio. Gimv, one of the main investment companies in Europe, is investing $14.5m, alongside existing shareholders and the founder, Pierre Chappaz. The idea is to become the leader in social media in Europe. What does that mean exactly? Well, Ebuzzing also owns Overblog, a leading blog platform in Europe with over 28 million unique visitors per month according to Comscore. Essentially all of Ebuzzing's properties provide a route for marketers to promote their brands on social media, in particular via viral video.

Windows Phone 7 Mango will play nicer with Macs, update your Connector app now

Windows Phone 7.5 will be wearing more Mac-friendly pajamas when it comes. Microsoft's Connector app just got updated to Version 2.0 and it enables both Marketplace support and ringtone transfers for Mango-equipped handsets. It also packs some other improvements which already work with WP 7.0, including drag-and-drop file importing from the Browse Device window, better backup and restore operations, and full sync and import support for Apple Aperture software. Connector 2.0 is ready and waiting at the App Store and Mango should poke its head around the mountain any day.

HP TouchPad Now Edits Office Docs and More Free Apps

About a week ago when I wrote a review of the HP TouchPad I mentioned that while HP had positioned the tablet as a “professional” device it lacked the capability to edit Microsoft Office documents. Well, that appears to have been corrected as HP announced an update to Quickoffice that will allow for the editing [...]

Huawei Honor leaks into the wild, prepares for ascension to the flagship throne?

Huawei's handsets may not get the high-profile, stateside attention other OEMs are subject to, but that's no reason for us to turn a blind eye to the company's efforts. Spotted out in the wild with an accompanying spec list, the Honor (or U8860) purportedly packs a 1.4GHz processor, 4-inch FWVGA LCD display, 5 megapixel rear-facing camera capable of 720p video, a thickness of 9.9mm and an unspecified version of Android 2.3. Judging by the phones Europe- and Asia-only UMTS 900MHz / 2100MHz bands, it's highly likely we won't have the honor of seeing the company's rumored flagship device grace North American shores. We'll keep an eye out and let you know if we catch this one slipping through the FCC's arms.

HP: TouchPad will receive OTA update for added 'functionality'

HP may have abandoned the TouchPad, but that apparently won't stop the company from issuing a post-mortem OTA update for its webOS tablet. Yesterday, an HP spokesperson confirmed to CNET that "HP TouchPad owners can look forward to an over-the-air update that will enhance the platform and add functionality and a growing applications catalog." The rep didn't offer any specifics, but reaffirmed that HP remains "fully committed to the ongoing support and service of customers who purchased webOS devices." The news comes on the heels of a Quickoffice HD update that dropped yesterday, and at a time when TouchPads are selling like hotcakes -- which probably explains HP's decision to issue a tweak. Indeed, the company went on to say that it's seen "huge spikes in activations and between 3-5X downloads of apps," since the TouchPad fire sale first launched.

Elgato EyeTV Mobile dongle brings live TV to the iPad 2

Elgato Eye TV Mobile
Sure, Elgato already has an app that lets you stream TV to your iPad -- but that's only if they're being broadcast online. To pull in live TV over the air you'd need a TV-tuner, something that has, until now, been unavailable for Apple's popular slate. By the end of September that lack of broadcast television will become just a distant memory with the release of EyeTV Mobile, a £100 (about $163) dongle that connects to the iPad's proprietary port. The tuner will be able to pull in MPEG 2 streams over DVB-T, but won't work with DVB-T2 broadcasts like Freeview HD. Check out the source for more details.

LG HX906TX home theater system promises 3D sound, enviable Super Bowl acoustics

Looking to enhance the audio in your man (or lady) cave? Then you may want to check out LG's new HX906TX 9.1 cinema sound system -- a ten-speaker package claiming to deliver "truly 360-degree sound." It's designed to make you feel like you're at the center of the audio (even if you're really at the far end of the room smooshed between two people on the couch) -- the way you might hear in a concert hall or really large bathroom with great acoustics. LG says it uses a DSP algorithm to pump audio vertically and horizontally using 3D reflectors, extending sound upwards and filling in the gaps. You'll also get added features like Blu-ray playback, WiFi Direct and Smart TV connectivity to smartphones and tablets using an app, although there's no word yet on pricing or availability. PR after the break.

GScreen's Spacebook begins shipping this November, doubles your laptop editing fun

Twins, like cupcakes, are universally regarded as a good thing. So, it stands to reason that GScreen's attempt to double your laptop's screen size would be an equally appealing idea. Turns out, duping a display took the Alaska-based company a wee bit longer to fully flesh out, but the time has finally arrived for its debut. Shipping this November, the aptly-named Spacebook will bring a capacious, portable desktop solution to on-the-go creative professionals. The girthy, 10-pound rig won't be winning any style points from the svelte is better crowd, but that's easy to overlook given its dual 17-inch 1920 x 1080 screens, choice of a Core i5 or i7 processor, up to 8GB DDR3 RAM, 500GB of storage, NVIDIA's GeForce GTS 250 (1GB) and DVD burner -- all encased in a magnesium alloy frame. You can grab the entry level model for $1899, but the higher-end, two-headed beast will cost you $2099. If you're in the market for the king of all laptop displays, then head to the source to get your order on.

When two chatbots have a conversation, everyone wins (video)

What did one chatbot say to the other chatbot? Quite a lot, actually -- but good luck making any sense out of it. That's what researchers from Cornell's Creative Machines Lab recently discovered, after pitting two bots against one another for a good ol' fashioned talk-off. It's all part of the lab's submission to this year's Loebner Prize Competition in Artificial Intelligence -- an event that awards $100,000 to the team whose computer programs can conduct the most human-like conversations. Unfortunately for Cornell's squad, their chatbots still have a long way to go before achieving conversational coherence, though they could easily get hired as anchors on most cable news networks. Throughout the course of their frenetic (and often snippy) discussion, one bot raised heady questions about God and existence, while the other boldly claimed to be a unicorn. Basically, they had the exact same conversation we used to have in our dorm rooms every night, at around 4 am. Watch it for yourself after the break. It's nothing short of sublime.
