While the CompactFlash Association scoots along at a maximum transfer rate of 167MB per second under its just released CF6.0 specification, Sandisk, Sony, and Nikon are already looking to the future. The trio have just officially proposed a new memory card format that switches from PATA to the PCI Express serial interface to achieve data transfer rates of up to 500 megabytes per second with a potential to extend maximum storage capacities beyond 2 terabytes. The proposed set of specifications hints at the high performance requirements we'll soon face as DSLRs and camcorders are updated to capture continuous burst shooting of massive RAW images and ever higher definition video. Naturally, the spec also enables photogs to transfer their troves of data more quickly to computers for post processing and combines high-speed transfer with a scaling system to extend battery life. The CompactFlash Association has already announced a new workgroup to study the proposal. Canon's Shigeto Kanda, CFA chairman of the board, had this to say about the proposal: Sounds like tacit approval to us. And really, anything that brings Sony and Sandisk together on a future storage format should be seen as a positive step. Unless, of course, you're the SD Card Association or anyone who recently purchased a CFast card.Future professional photography and video applications will require memory cards with faster read/write speeds. The development of a new high-performance card standard with a serial interface will meet the needs of the professional imaging industry for years to come and open the door for exciting new applications.

Back in July, I wrote about a nifty new startup called Standing Cloud that makes it easy to set up hosted installs of dozens of cloud-based applications? like WordPress, Drupal, or Trac? with a single click. Unfortunately, all our commenters seemed to care about was the company's logo, which consisted of Papyrus font set against a plain white background. Now Standing Cloud is back with a new, much more attractive logo that should appease all you font critics, and it has some big news in tow: it just closed a $3 million Series B funding round led by Avalon Ventures, with participation from existing investor Foundry Group. This brings Standing Cloud's total funding to $5 million since it was founded in 2009.Source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Techcrunch/~3/WLiwkSkHJuE/

The Google-Groupon acquisition rumors are coming in hot and heavy now. The day began with a rumored price of $2.5 billion, which was way too low. Now it ends with a more likely price somewhere between $5 billion or $6 billion. Whatever the price, it will likely be Google's largest acquisition ever if it goes through (beating out DoubleClick's $3.1 billion, and certainly YouTube's $1.65 billion price tags). But why is Google even interested in Groupon? It is essentially an e-commerce site, bringing consumers daily deals from local and national merchants. Google doesn't do e-commerce very well (although it is trying through sexier product search). Buying Groupon would be a very risky $5 billion bet for Google in an unproven area outside its sweet spot of search I won't even get into valuation, which at $5 billion would be somewhere in the neighborhood of ten times whispered revenue run-rate of $500 million. But Groupon is the clear market leader in the fastest growing new category on the Internet, and Google seems willing to pay whatever it takes to buy market leadership. As one CEO in the local commerce industry put it to me on Monday, "I think the way Google will evolve is they will want to control everything significant on the Internet."Source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Techcrunch/~3/EMNuk9RxuyA/

It's impossible to throw a rock at a media outlet today without hitting a story about Wikileaks. And to make the rock throwing even easier, the subject of this week's Why Is This News is: Wikileaks - 'enemy of democracy, just plain fact of life... or both?' In it, Sarah argues that, for good or ill, the leaking of several hundred thousand diplomatic cables simply reflects today's reality that no information is ever truly secret in the Internet age. The US government, like major companies before them, simply need to adapt to that reality - improving their behaviour, but also getting better at locking down the truly secret stuff. Paul, on the other hand, just hates everything about Wikileaks, describing it as one man's pathetic ego trip which reveals almost nothing useful and which, if anything, will massively set back the site's stated goal of 'transparency'. In many ways, we're both arguing the same point from different angles. But, hey, at least we're arguing - which always makes for a fun episode.
